Caregivers in Golden COPart of being a family caregiver for your elderly loved one involves anticipating needs that he might have. If you already have a care plan in place, this is a lot easier to do.

When Will Your Loved One Need More Care?
Sometimes you have plenty of time to come to grips with the fact that your elderly loved one is going to need more of your time, attention, and care in coming years. Other times, you wind up in a situation in which your loved one suddenly needs all of your care immediately due to a stroke or other illness or accident. Regardless of when you think your loved one is going to need your help, it’s good to get a plan on paper now rather than later. Some of these topics are difficult to think about and talk about with your loved one or other family members, but it’s extremely important.

Does Your Elderly Loved One Have Existing Healthcare Needs?
Whether your loved one needs significant amounts of care from you now or not, are you already aware of existing healthcare needs? If not, you and your loved one need to sit down and talk about what is going on with her health. It may even be possible that you need to start going to doctor’s appointments with her now so that you can get a better idea how she wants to manage her health going forward.

Are There Safety Issues to Consider?
If it’s been a while since you’ve been to your elderly loved one’s home, now is the time to schedule a visit. You can scope out any potential safety issues and hopefully get them resolved quickly. This is also a good opportunity to spot things that you may not have noticed before about your loved one. Are there stairs in the home, and if so, does your loved one have difficulty with them? Look for areas that you can correct or fix for her, such as adding hand rails in the bathroom or moving furniture that wasn’t a problem before. Checking into these safety issues now can mean prolonging the time that your loved one is able to remain on her own in her own home.

Does Your Loved One Have Social or Personal Needs to Consider?
Sometimes your loved one has issues that he’ll try to hide from you. Maybe it’s become increasingly difficult to get dressed on his own or take care of other grooming and toiletry needs. But since it’s embarrassing to talk about that with you, he hasn’t mentioned it. It’s also possible that your loved one has social needs that aren’t being met because he doesn’t get out and about like he used to. In these cases, maybe it’s time to look into hiring home care providers who can help with these issues and more.

Developing a care plan for your elderly loved one helps to make sure you’re offering the help that she actually needs.
